The 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club: Fear The Green Mile

the green mile pga championship quail hollow 2017 chronogolf blog

The 2017 PGA Championship is starting today and there’s a lot to be excited about.

This season’s final major will be held for the first time at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC. While Rory McIlroy holds the record for the lowest round played there (61, in 2015), all eyes are on Jordan Spieth who could become the youngest player to achieve a “Career Grand Slam.” The Quail Hollow course is one of the most difficult courses on the Tour and it will be very exciting to see who performs the best during this year’s PGA Championship.

The Green Mile

The biggest challenge of this course, the “Green Mile”, comes at the end. The last 3 closing holes, #16, 17 and 18, are some of the hardest and most decisive on the PGA tour, similarly to the closing holes at TPC Sawgrass, Carnoustie, and Muirfield Village. Here’s the breakdown:

– Hole #16: A massive 506 yard dog-leg par 4

The trouble starts from the 1st tee-shot, which needs to be accurate enough to find its way on the tight fairway. Anything too left, and the ball will end up in the water. The following shot is just as hard. To reach the green, players have to aim very precisely, as it’s surrounded by water. In other words, you can’t miss left, right or long.

– Hole #17: A tricky 223 yard near-island par 3

The following hole is not an easy one either. This par 3 is the hardest on the course, and one of Quail Hollow’s signature holes. This near-island hole is usually on the players’ minds during the whole round. A very intimidating tee shot, especially in windy condition – players can only hope they don’t land in the water or bunker.

– Hole #18: A narrow 494 yard downhill par 4

Quail Hollow’s 18th and final hole is a near-500 yards downhill par 4. The starting tee-shot, again, is not an easy one. On this final hole, players will have to aim precisely at the fairway, avoiding the creek, trees, and bunkers. The Green Mile ends with this tricky and decisive hole – and we can’t wait to see how the players handle this final challenge over the next four days of the PGA Championship.

5. Its rich history

During the original construction phase the landscape architects discovered a series of old bottles buried deep in the ground. These discoveries led course management to believe the course sits on an old bootlegging site from the prohibition era. Long ago in the late 1700s the land was used to smuggle illegal alcohol across Lake Erie onto American land. This rich history is what led to the courses namesake, Whisky Run. Now you too can enjoy a glass of fine whisky at the club house while taking in the land that was so important to bootleggers in the prohibition era.
