Introducing the FedExCup

FedEx Cup

What is the FedEx cup?

The FedEx Cup is a season-long points competition that was introduced to the PGA TOUR in 2007. Over the season’s 46 events, players fight to become the FedEx Cup Champion.

Everything you need to know about the 2017 U.S. Open

header blog usopen 1 1500x400 - Everything you need to know about the 2017 U.S. Open

The United States Open Championship is starting today!

The U.S. Open is the 2nd major of the year,  following the Masters won by Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia. This year’s event will be played at Erin Hill Golf Club in Erin, Wisconsin.  Here’s a quick overview of this legendary championship.

Erin Hills Logo trans background - Everything you need to know about the 2017 U.S. Open

1. This year’s course has a very traditional set-up, with narrow fairways, thick rough and firm fast conditions.  It is regarded as a “Heartland” course (not a links course) by its designers. Dana Fry, one of the course designers, said: “We want to make sure that distinction is made,” “A Heartland course is in between a parkland course and a links.

2. Bunkers. There are 138 bunkers. Most of them have no flat bottom, meaning they’re “real” hazards for the TOUR pros who miss the greens. The U.S. Open is widely regarded as the toughest of all four majors – and this year’s edition won’t be an exception.

3. The official yardage for Erin Hills is 7,741 yards, making it the longest course in the tournament’s 117 years history. Obviously, the range will vary each round according to the setup, but the course will remain very, very long.

4. Sunday’s last six holes will be the most exciting. They’re composed of two par 5s (holes 14, 18), two par 4s (holes 15, 17) and two par 3s (holes 13, 16). Having two par 5s on the back side will most likely create a lot of tension on the course. Get ready to see some swings on the leaderboard!

5. This is the first time a U.S. Open takes place in Wisconsin. The first 116 U.S. Open took place in the Great Lakes (68), New York (18), Pennsylvania (17), Illinois (13), Ohio (7), Michigan (6) and Minnesota (4). Wisconsin boasts 700,000 golfers among its 5.7M residents. “They’ve waited a long time for this chance,” said USGA president Diana Murphy.

6. Tiger Woods’s first U.S. Open victory was at Pebble Beach in 2000. He won by a record 15 strokes, closing at a four-under 67.

7. Rory McIlroy was aged 22 when he won by eight strokes in the 2011 U.S. Open, with a tournament low of 16-under 268 for 72 holes.

8. Jordan Spieth became the youngest U.S. Open champion since Jones in 1923 when he won at Chambers Bay in 2015 at 21 years old.

9. This year’s defending champion is Dustin Johnson, who won last year’s championship at Oakmont with a 1-under 69.

10. In 1974, the USGA Competition Committee Chairman Sandy Tatum defended the course set-up saying “We’re not trying to humiliate the best players in the world, we’re simply trying to identify them.”

5 Reasons to Watch the 2017 Players Championship

playersheader - 5 Reasons to Watch the 2017 Players Championship
It’s that time of the year – the Players Championship is finally back!
Here’s 5 good reasons to watch the tournament over the next four days.

1. It’s a very challenging course

The Player’s Championship is held at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This year’s edition is the 36th at the Stadium course. It’s known for being hazardous and difficult – most often because of its 17th hole nicknamed the “Island Green”. The 17th is a 137 yards par 3 surrounded by water. Every year, over 100,000 golf balls end up in the surrounding water.

A post shared by Chronogolf (@chronogolf) on

2. Discover the world’s best new players

Although The Players Championship is often won by high-profile golfers, some newer players try and sometimes succeed in winning it. This year, Spanish pro-golfer John Ram is one of these. In the last year, he climbed more than 500 places in the official world golf ranking up to the 12th spot. His entry to the next championships was guaranteed by his first win on the PGA tour at the Farmers Insurance Open, with a 60-foot eagle putt on the final hole. See it here:

3. The Players Championship is nicknamed golf’s 5th Major

While there are only 4 official majors every year, the Players is often considered the “5th major”. Why? Because it’s a challenging course and because only the best players how up. The level of the players and the enormous winner’s purse makes this tournament just as exciting as the 4 other majors. The Players also fills in the gap between the Masters and the U.S. Open, ahead of a busy golf summer.

4. Will Jason Day win twice in a row?

No player has ever won the Players twice in a row, but some have won multiple times. Jack Nicklaus is the only player to have won 3 Players Championship in his career, while Couples, Elkington, Sutton, Love III and Woods all won twice. Will last year’s winner Jason Day be the first to win twice in a row?

5. A weekend full of surprises

The Player’s Championship is always full of surprises. You never know who will win until Sunday’s the last few holes. This year, the course’s 12th hole was also revamped. The par 4 is now 270 yards long, but because of the way it has been set up, most players will hesitate to start it with a drive. Additionally, there is close to $2M in prizes for the winner, totaling over $10M in cash prizes.

Major Championships: The Masters Tournament at Augusta National

Are you excited for one of the biggest golf event of the year?
The Masters Tournament is starting today!

The Masters Tournament is the first of 4 major championships held every year in professional golf. It is held at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia since 1934. The Masters Tournament is an invitational type of event where every year, thousands of golfers gather to see who will play the lowest score on this incredibly complex course. Winning the Masters is one of the biggest achievements any professional golfer can dream of. This year again, the world’s best golf players, such as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mckilson are all dreaming about winning the Masters.

When a player wins the tournament, the tradition is that he will receive his own green sports jacket. The tradition was established by Augusta National Golf Club co-founder Clifford Roberts, and has been going on since 1949. It’s also a tradition for the previous year’s winner to help the new winner put on his new jacket during the closing ceremony.

In addition to the jacket, winners receive a gold medal and have their name engraved on the master’s trophy. Winners of the Masters Tournament are automatically invited to the three other major championships for the next 5 years and will receive lifetime invitations to the Masters. Players who perform great feats are also eligible to receive various luxurious gifts. For example, the player with the lowest daily score receives a crystal vase, the players who manage to score a double eagle or score a hole-in-one win a large crystal bowl, and the players receive crystal goblets for every eagle they make.

Before the tournament, there is the popular Par 3 contest. First introduced in 1960, it’s usually played a day before the tournament.  Players compete for the lowest score on this 9-hole course where every hole is a short par 3. The winner of the Par-3 contest receives a crystal bowl, although no par 3 contest winner has ever won the masters tournament. Golfers can also use their own children as caddies, making this a fun and family-oriented day. In 2015, there were more than 9 hole-in-one during the round, and in 2016, Camilo Villegas blew everyone away after he scored 2 hole-in-ones in the same round.
Augusta is one of the most beautiful golf course in the world, with its lush vegetation, colorful flowers, carefully designed sand traps and beautifully maintained fairways. The par 72 course is 7,435 yards long and offers spectacular views and uncountable challenges. In the next few days, the best golf players in the world will compete on the course but only one will win a green jacket. Who do you think will win? Spieth, McIlroy, Mickelson? There are so many great players, it’s hard to say. One thing that’s for sure is that there will be a lot of surprises. Enjoy your Masters!

Fun facts:
  • Jack Nicklaus has won 6 Masters, Arnold Palmer won 4 and Tiger Woods won 4, as well.
  • It’s common for TV broadcasters to add sounds of birds during the game to create more of an “exotic” feeling on television.
  • A rumour says that there’s blue dye in the water ponds at Augusta National to make them look better.
  • The official member list is secret – if you want to be a member, you have to be invited.
  • In May, on the very last day the club is open before closing for the summer, Augusta National’s caddies play free all day.

EDIT: Sergio Garcia has won the 201 7 Masters Tournament.
